SCUBA DIVING

Kwa-Zulu Natal hosts some of the best scuba diving sites to be found. Generally autumn & winter provides the best conditions for a dive expedition as calm seas and excellent visibility truly portrays the magnitude of this whimsical wonderland.

Ranked amongst the top shark & gamefish dives in the world Protea Banks is most certainly not short of excitement and a definite must. Situated 7.5km straight out to sea from Shelly Beach these sites incorporate a range of caves, pinnacles, ridges and amphitheatres. The reef lies between 27m and 40m, and is approximately 6km long and 800 meters in width. It has been a favourite dive spot since 1991 when it was first recognised as a prime dive site.

Further north towards Durban is Aliwal Shoal, approximately 5km offshore from Umkomaas, this is one of the most well known sites on the KwaZulu Natal coastline. The main attraction being Ragged Tooth Sharks, the best area to spot them is at the Cathedral, which is a 4m arch of rock.

The most southerly coral reef in Africa, Sodwana is exposed to exceptionally rough seas at times, but the marine life is special, with new species of fish, nudibranchs and invertebrate seemingly being discovered all the time. The reefs consist mostly of soft coral, stunted but colourful, and impressive hard-coral growth, especially where the reef has been killed off and regenerated. With no rivers nearby, visibility is very good.

For many years synonymous with game fishing, the discovery of rich reefs has made Sodwana Bay a magnet for divers. Go at the weekend and you'll have to share this paradise with thousands of South Africans, so visit during the week while they're working!

Sodwana Bay is situated in the northern reaches of the province. Sodwana, meaning "little one on its own " in Zulu, is easily accessible, only four hours by car from Durban. The reefs at Sodwana are named after their distance from the launch site, starting from 2 Mile going up to 9 Mile. Perhaps the most scenic reef is7 Mile which on a good day can compare with the best in the world. Over 1200 species of fish have been identified at Sodwana Bay.
Diving apart, a drive to nearby Lake Sibaya, the largest natural freshwater lake in South Africa, is popular, with a good chance of seeing hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles. Phinda, Mkuze and Hluhluwe game reserves are within easy reach
.
Thonga Beach Mabibi lies adjacent to Africa’s southern-most coral reefs making it the only tropical dive site in South Africa. In global terms, Mabibi offers some of the best diving in the world, but it has gone largely unnoticed because of its remoteness. Even in South Africa it has remained secluded and so divers are guaranteed an exciting underwater experience.
More than 1,200 species of fish are found on the reefs off Mabibi, including Moorish idols, parrot fish, blue surgeons and marble and manta rays. The warm Indian Ocean waters also attract huge schools of bottlenose dolphin as well as sharks, whale sharks and turtles.
